Top Advantages of Acrylic Sound Barriers
Acrylic sound barriers are an excellent choice for reducing noise from highways, railways, industrial sites, and commercial areas. They combine high transparency, strong acoustic performance, lightweight properties, and design flexibility – often outperforming glass, concrete, or polycarbonate.
1. Superior Light Transmission (>92%)
Acrylic offers over 92% light transmittance – even higher than standard glass. Unlike opaque barriers that create dark, tunnel-like conditions, acrylic preserves natural light and scenic views. This makes it ideal for urban roads, residential perimeters, bridges, and elevated structures.
2. Excellent Noise Reduction
The density and rigidity of acrylic provide effective sound reflection and absorption. Typical sound reduction values (Rw):
10mm thickness: 10 dB
15mm thickness: ~15-20 dB
20mm thickness: ~20-25dB
For demanding applications, reinforced (stiffened) acrylic panels can further improve performance without losing clarity.
3. Lightweight & Impact-Resistant
Acrylic is up to 50% lighter than glass of the same thickness, reducing structural support costs and simplifying installation. It is also about 11 times stronger than glass in impact resistance. When broken, it cracks into large, dull-edged pieces instead of dangerous sharp shards – a major safety advantage for high-traffic zones.
4. Weather & UV Resistance
High-quality acrylic sound barriers are manufactured with UV-stabilized formulations, resisting yellowing and surface degradation for years. They perform reliably from -30°C to +80°C and withstand moisture, salt spray, and common pollutants – requiring minimal maintenance.
5. Design Flexibility
Acrylic can be easily cut, drilled, and thermoformed into flat, curved, or angled panels. Available finishes include clear, translucent, frosted, or various colors to blend with the environment or improve visibility. Large custom panels reduce framing costs.
6. Easy Installation & Low Maintenance
Lightweight design allows fast, on-site installation without heavy lifting equipment. Cleaning is simple – mild soap and water with a soft cloth restores clarity. Optional hard coatings improve scratch resistance for dusty areas.
Reinforced (Stiffened) Panels – A Bonus Option
For extreme conditions (high wind, flying debris), fiberglass-reinforced or rib-stiffened acrylic panels deliver significantly higher impact strength and rigidity while retaining most light transmission. Contact our engineers for custom solutions.
Honest Note on Limitations
Vs. polycarbonate: PC has higher impact strength but scratches more easily and has lower clarity. Acrylic offers the best balance of optics and stiffness for noise reflection.
UV aging: Cheap acrylic yellows over time – we use only premium UV-stabilized acrylic with a 10+ year outdoor warranty.
Scratches: For ground-level zones with sand or gravel, an anti-scratch coating is recommended.
Typical Applications
Highway and roadside noise walls
Railway noise enclosures
Industrial equipment enclosures
Outdoor HVAC unit sound fences
Stadium and public space noise control
