 FAQ

1.What is a highway acoustic barrier and how does it reduce traffic noise?

A roadside structure placed between the traffic and the receiver that blocks the direct sound path, absorbs or reflects energy at its surface, and forces sound to travel a longer diffracted path over the top.

2.What insertion loss can be expected from a highway barrier?

Achievable insertion loss depends on barrier height, distance, terrain and source spectrum; performance is normally verified by calculation (for example ISO 9613-2) and stated as D_LR per EN 1793-2.

3.How is barrier height decided for a highway project?

Height is derived from the source-to-receiver geometry and the required reduction at the nearest sensitive receptor, then checked against structural and sight-distance constraints.

4.Should a highway barrier be absorptive?

Absorptive facings are usually preferred where barriers face each other or where a sensitive receptor sits opposite the barrier, because they limit the build-up of reflected noise.
